Salzburg is located in central Austria, near the German/Bavarian border.
Salzburg literally means "Salt Castle", and derives its name from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach river, which were subject to a toll in the 8th century. Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria.
Its "Old Town", with its world famous baroque architecture and home to the famous "Sound of Music” where you can also shop on Getreidegasse to find lederhosen that fit, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the cobbled centre.
The contemporary contours of Museums and relaxed bars along the right bank and the solitude of Kapuzinerberg are not with in keeping with the theatrical nature of the rest of the city nor is sitting on the banks of the fast-flowing Salzach as the sun sets over the city.
Main attractions include walking along the Salzach River, climbing up to the Hohensalzburg fortress which hangs over the city where you can view the breath-taking views of Salzburg and the Alps, Schloss Hellbrunn with fountains and pretty gardens, Mozarts Geburtshaus , Salzburg Zoo, Museum of Natural History and The Untersberg mountains for spectacular views as well as the Ice Caves located on the outskirts of Salzburg.
